German politicians, including Boris Pistorius, voiced concerns that the AfD's actions in the Saxony-Anhalt parliament pose a threat to democracy.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius criticized the election of a state parliament president in Saxony-Anhalt, stating that whoever allowed it had "offended against the democracy of our country." Political parties, including the Greens and the Left, voiced concerns that the election of an Alternative for Germany (AfD) member to the position posed a danger to democracy.
The controversy centres on the AfD's growing influence in eastern German states. The election of a party member to a significant parliamentary role, particularly one often seen as a guardian of democratic procedure, has ignited debate about the party's integration into the political mainstream and its potential impact on democratic institutions.
