Turkey's Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced that identification will be required for cigarette purchases to enforce age restrictions.
Turkey's Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced new regulations requiring the use of national identification numbers for cigarette purchases. This measure aims to prevent sales to individuals under a certain age. The ministry is implementing further restrictions as part of its ongoing campaign against tobacco use.
This policy shift reflects a growing global trend towards stricter controls on tobacco sales, particularly concerning youth access. By linking purchases to identification, Turkish authorities intend to create a more robust system for age verification and to curb underage smoking.
