Research — commissioned briefs

One question about the region.
One brief you can act on.

Zaviye reads the press of Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Turkey and their neighbours in the languages it is written in. The research desk turns that reading into an answer to your question, for you alone. A person checks every brief and signs it.

What a brief contains
  • The answer first, in a paragraph you can forward
  • The evidence, each source linked in its original language with an English gloss
  • How sure we are, and why
  • What we could not verify, said plainly
  • The name of the person who checked it
Questions we take
  • A market or sector, and who is in it
  • A rule or regulation, and how it is applied in practice
  • How one story is being told across Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew and English press
  • The public record of an institution or company
  • A map of the sources worth reading on a subject
Questions we decline
  • Investigations of private individuals
  • Opposition research, or work for a political campaign
  • Anything that tracks, profiles or locates people
  • Work meant to appear as Zaviye journalism

Each refusal is a decision, not a gap in capacity. Some questions cost more than any fee covers.

The wall between the desk and the newsroom
  • A commission never changes what Zaviye publishes, or how a client is covered.
  • A brief belongs to the client. It is not published unless both sides agree.
  • The newsroom is software, and says so. The research desk is a person, and says so.
How it works
  1. 01 · Ask

Send the question below, with a deadline if you have one.

  2. 02 · Quote

Within two business days you get the scope, a delivery date and a fixed price. Or a note that we are the wrong desk for it.

  3. 03 · Brief

Nothing is owed until you accept the quote. No hourly billing, no retainer.

Ask a question

Tell us what you need to know, and by when.

A sentence or two is enough. The quote comes back to this address; nothing is owed until you accept it.

Briefings, by sector

A regular brief on one sector, read across the region's press.

This does not exist yet. Tell us which sector you would read, and you will hear first if it starts. One email when it does, none before.
